Top 5 Safety Tips for Truck Drivers
Top 5 Safety Tips for Truck Drivers
January 21, 2020
Brandt Peterbilt
Driving a heavy truck can be a difficult job that requires a lot of skill and training. Drivers are not only responsible for their safety on the road but the safety of others as well. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, most deaths in heavy truck collisions are passenger vehicle occupants. Passengers in smaller vehicles are incredibly vulnerable with a significant weight difference and lower ground clearance, which can lead to vehicles under riding trucks in crashes. Additional factors in truck crashes include diminished braking ability in loaded tractor-trailers, wet and slippery conditions, poor maintenance and driver fatigue.
Safety is vital for a truck driver and can be the difference between life and death in unexpected situations that arise on the road. Here are our top safety tips for truck drivers:
1. Regular maintenance on your truck
Regular
truck maintenance
is an essential part of your safety tool kit. Routine maintenance and inspections can minimize the risk of accidents. Inspect all fluid levels for fuel, brakes, motor oil, coolant and power steering, as well as the battery charge and windshield washer periodically. Brakes are vital to managing the load you are carrying and require special attention, especially in the winter months. Check the front and rear lights, signal lamps, hydraulic lines, reflectors, tires and tire pressure, tow joints, and the body and glass of the truck as often as possible and during trips.
2. Cargo Loading
It is crucial to load cargo evenly and ensure it is adequately secured to prevent shifting. Cargo should be bound, covered and securely fastened to avoid shifting, which could cause a collision or rollover. The Highway Traffic Act states any load overhanging the rear of a vehicle by 1.5 metres (5 feet) or more should be marked by a red light when lights are required (half an hour before or after sunset and sunrise or at any other times of poor light conditions) and, at all other times, by a red flag or red marker. It’s imperative drivers understand special safety precautions, such as protective bulkheads or special lading, required for certain types of cargo and commodities.
3. Cargo Inspection
As per the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, cargo should be re-checked no more than 80 kilometres from the loading point. Additionally, inspect cargo and cargo securement systems at the following intervals based on which occurs first:
Change of duty status of the driver
The vehicle has been driven for 3 hours
The vehicle has been driven for 240 Kms
4. Plan Your Trip
Checking weather and traffic reports will help you prepare for adverse driving conditions. A general rule of thumb is to reduce speed by one-third in rainy weather and by half in snow or ice, which will give you extra time to stop. When possible, check out delivery spots on foot. This will provide you with a better view of obstacles such as hydrants, ditches and posts. It will also help you plan your entry and exit into a docking facility.
5. Your Health and Wellness
Truck safety involves more than just the truck.
Heavy truck drivers should practice self-care
to ensure they remain alert and vigilant throughout their journey. Truck drivers can maintain a safe work envorinment by getting enought rest, sustaining a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Truck driving is physically and mentally demanding. The longer you are on the road, the higher your chances of an accident. Being prepared will help reduce the possibility of an accident and keep you safe on the road.
