Peterbilt Electric Truck Models: Are They Right For Your Business?
Peterbilt Electric Truck Models: Are They Right For Your Business?
May 03, 2021
Brandt Peterbilt
Peterbilt is paving the way with new electric truck models that reduce emissions while still providing the premium performance and driver experience customers expect. With the race to zero emissions, let's discuss why adding electric vehicles to your fleet is right for your business and what current governments are doing to alleviate worries of a higher up-front cost.
2021 has proven to be a pivotal year for the electric vehicle, especially in the truck market. While 2020 saw the planning stages for electric trucks, 2021 is the year electric trucks shift into gear. Over the next year, Canadian and U.S. markets' zero-emissions freight vehicle availability is expected to increase from over 70 models from 2 dozen manufacturers to at least 85 models from over 30 companies. This quick expansion has been fueled with pre-ordered units from progressive companies such as UPS, Amazon, Walmart, PepsiCo, Sysco and Loblaw.
As model availability increases, the Canadian government is also pressuring for an urgent transition to zero-emissions vehicles. To meet regulators' ambitious climate targets, Canadian policymakers must now address pollution impacts from the trucking industry, accounting for 27% of the country's transportation greenhouse gas emissions. Though the zero-emissions truck market has some hurdles to overcome, it is anticipated that these will be behind us soon. It is no secret that many are sighting the higher initial purchase price of electric trucks as a huge obstacle to get electric trucks on the road. Good news is on the horizon, with decreasing production costs anticipated as manufacturers scale up production and government-provided funding predicted for the future.
As for battery pack efficiency, researchers are continuously working on solutions that increase battery capacity while decreasing production costs. In the last ten years, battery costs have reduced by 89%, while vehicle travel has grown. Infrastructure concern remaines a top priority with a concentrated effort of utility companies
partnering with fleets
to build out charging infrastructure to support electric trucks. The Canadian government has further solidified their commitment by encouraging growth through government initiatives, such as the current NRCan ZEVIP Funding Infrastructure Program, which offers rebates for charging station purchases.
In December 2020, the federal government further pledged an additional $437 million toward zero emissions deployment and charging infrastructure. With governmental commitment and electric vehicle technology and infrastructure advancements, we can expect electric vehicles to continue to grow exponentially.
How will all this affect your business's bottom line? With the cost of purchasing an electric truck currently more significant than the cost of a comparable diesel model, many commercial fleets are purchasing electric trucks in anticipation of a lower total cost of ownership down the road. Electric trucks can be more efficient than diesel counterparts at moving the same freight, reducing fuel costs, maintenance costs and providing overall operational benefits to generate significant savings.
Whether the choice is to adopt electric to meet a company's own green initiatives or comply with increasing government regulations, the added promise of cost savings cannot be ignored. Providing the switch to electric vehicles, is the inevitable next step in the evolution of the trucking sector.
