Old World Meets New in the Peterbilt Model 389

The Model 389 refines Peterbilt’s heritage with improved design to create a legendary classic. In 2006, the Peterbilt Model 389 was introduced at the Mid-America Trucking Show and replaced the Model 379, which was the largest highway truck sold by Peterbilt at the time.
 

TURNING THE MODEL 379 UP A NOTCH

 
The Model 379 was available in two configurations based on its bumper to back of cab length (BBC). The standard hood created a BBC of 119 inches with an extended hood configuration of 127-inch BBC for larger engines and radiators. The bumper to back of cab length of the Model 389 comes in at just over 131 inches, making it the longest hood Peterbilt has ever offered.
 

OLD WORLD CRAFTMANSHIP

 
The Peterbilt Model 389 shares the bare cab structure, large windshield and horizontally-mounted windshield wipers with the Model 379. Like its predecessor, the 389 is equipped with the most powerful versions of the engine offered in the already proven Class 8 Peterbilt on-highway trucks.

BUILT TO WORK HARD

 
The Peterbilt Model 389 features the industry’s only all-aluminum hood. This, combined with other lightweight components such as an all-aluminum cab and lightweight front and rear suspensions increase the Peterbilt Model 389’s load capacity. 
 
Peterbilt’s all-aluminum cab construction is highly durable and lightweight; increasing payloads to maximize performance and profitability. Additionally, protection against corrosion and wear and tear of the cab is tackled with a huck-bolted cab including lap seam construction and bulkhead style doors.
 

NEW WORLD SOPHISTICATION

 
The 389 features new headlamps protected with an impact-resistant lens. The bright, consistent beam pattern contributes to the reduction of driver fatigue.
 
Aerodynamic enhancements and an optional fuel-efficiency package translate to a low cost of operation.
Air disc brakes and electronic stability control are standard in the Model 389 and offer the best stopping distances. Optional day cab configurations provide opportunity for a variety of applications.
 
The Model 389 also showcases a new fender front and rear trim, with the rear bracket styling cueing back to the step on the Model 351 fender. The exterior features a rugged stainless-steel grille with a polished aluminum crown and distinctive punched oval pattern.
