Electronic Logging: Everything you need to know
Electronic Logging: Everything you need to know
May 30, 2019
Brandt Peterbilt
With the goal of increasing safety and accountability, the Canadian Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandate will come into effect by December 2019. This new mandate is intended to improve processes and prevent logbook errors or tampering. To understand how the trucking industry will be impacted, we’ll outline some key points of the new ELD mandate.
ELD Mandate – What is it?
Electronic Logging Devices are electronic logbooks that automatically collect hours of service from a driver. Canada will implement similar regulations to the United States, which have been in place since 2017. The goal of the new ELD mandate is to standardize logbooks and improve fleet safety overall.
An overview of the Canadian ELD Mandate
The Canadian ELD Mandate will:
Standardize processes to prevent errors, logbook tampering and driver harassment
Adopt most of the provisions in the U.S. Mandate, which took effect in December of 2017
Change how drive time is recorded and reported without changing the Hours of Service regulations
Require replacing paper logs with a regulation-compliant device that connects directly to the ECM
Possibly require existing “e-logging” devices to be updated or replaced as per new device requirements
Why do we need a Canadian ELD Mandate?
The Canadian ELD Mandate is intended to improve road safety by preventing extended work days and driver fatigue. However, that’s not all. Each year, more than $650 billion in goods are transported across the U.S. – Canada border and it is the responsibility of the drivers and fleets to comply with changing policies on both sides of the border. Canada will maintain similar regulations as the U.S to ensure cross-border consistency, which will enable drivers to travel across North America without worrying about complying with different mandates.
ELD Devices
There are many ELD providers available and finding the best solution for your business may require some research. Depending on the size of your
trucking operation
, the type of ELD system you select may vary.
For
single truck operators
, reviewing your current and future needs before purchasing an ELD will help decide what works for your business.
Larger trucking operations
will have more specific requirements when it comes to ELDs. Ensuring easy integration is crucial, while most ELD systems will integrate with existing Transportation Management Systems (TMS), some devices do not.
Choosing an ELD system with simple log-in/ log-out processes, reliable GPS functions and an excellent customer service provider will be important for any business, large or small.
