5-Step Combine Inspection Checklist
5-Step Combine Inspection Checklist
September 26, 2017
Agriculture
For farmers, harvest is the most crucial time of the year. To ensure you get the most out of your field and the most money in your pocket, here’s a 5-step combine inspection checklist.
1. CHECK THRESHING & AUGER COMPONENTS
Threshing and auger components are arguably the most important components of the combine. Even the smallest amount of damage in a concave section or rasp bar can dramatically affect harvest efficiency and yield loss. Check the overall condition and straightness of concave bar wear edges. Look for damaged or worn pins, wires and augers. Ensure rasp elements, louvers and tines are not bent, broken or loose. Lastly, check the condition and tension of the belts, springs and chains to ensure they’re not loose, overly tight or worn out. Any of these issues could strain your machine and adversely impact your combine’s output.
2. IDENTIFY MISSING HARDWARE
Inspect your combine for any loose or missing nuts, screws, shields and sheet metal. If you notice any loose or missing hardware, tighten or replace them to prevent machine breakdown. If you find spots where shields are missing, replace the shields right away so the components meant to be guarded avoid contact with moving parts and don’t become a safety hazard.
3. INSPECT DRIVE COMPONENTS
Your drive chains and belts work hard and proper maintenance is crucial for reliable operation. Replace any components that might compromise smooth operation during harvest. Check for chain tension and length - chains measuring 3% longer than the original length should be replaced. Review sprockets for excessive tooth wear or cupping. If you replace chains, always replace the sprockets as well. Inspect the belts for cracks, especially ones that run across all three ribs in the same place. Lastly, check for bearings that are sloppy or running hot.
4. CALIBRATE LOSS & YIELD MONITORS
Ensure that your yield monitor, GPS system and other components have been backed-up, calibrated and are providing accurate information. Grain cart and other equipment should also be verified as providing correct calibration. You may also want to perform a check load for maximum calibration before the season begins.
5. OPTIMIZE COMBINE ADJUSTMENTS
Each combine make has an optimal match of settings that capture the most yield with minimal damage. Throughout harvest, you’ll need to change configurations for different crops and conditions. Adjust operating speed to keep threshing fully charged at all times. Doing this not only boosts harvest speed, but minimizes grain damage. Frequently look, see and feel how the combine is operating when in the field and make small adjustments based on your owner’s manual.
Follow this 5-step combine inspection checklist to identify any potential issues that need repair before your most profitable time of year. Ensure your combine runs smoothly and that valuable field time isn’t wasted in the shop.
