National Safety Month: Forklift Safety Tips
National Safety Month: Forklift Safety Tips
June 15, 2022
Material Handling
At Brandt, we are observing this year’s National Safety Month by shedding light on forklift safety. Forklifts are one of the most common pieces of equipment and one of the leading causes of workplace injury and fatal accidents. Many factors contribute to forklift accidents, including excessive speed, lack of training, poor maintenance, driving with elevated loads, improper use and more. However, 70% of forklift accidents can be prevented with proper forklift training and certification. In this blog, we cover the most common forklift accidents and how you can reduce your risk of forklift-related incidents in the workplace.
The leading causes of forklift accidents
Forklift accidents fall into three risk categories: user error, work environment and mechanical design. The most common forklift accidents include:
Vehicle tip-over
Crushed by vehicle
Crushed between two vehicles
Struck or run over by a forklift
Struck by falling material
Fall from a platform on the forks
Forklift safety tips
Get trained and certified
Most forklift accidents result from inadequate training. We recommend placing a strict company protocol that only
trained and certified personnel
can operate a forklift. Forklift certifications are valid for three years - be sure to keep a database of each operator’s forklift certification expiry date and offer recertification and training.
Perform pre-use inspections
Part of forklift training includes how to properly perform a pre-use inspection, which applies each time the unit is operated. In the case of continuous use, the operator may visually inspect the equipment during the work shift or work period as required by the employers operating procedures that they develop. Identify any issues, look for potential hazards and never operate a forklift that requires repair.
Always maintain a clear view of the load and pedestrians
Always look in the direction of travel and if the load restricts your forward visibility, operate the equipment in reverse. Be aware of other workers and always make eye contact with pedestrians. Ensure you have a 360° view, using side and rear view mirrors to your advantage.
Stay within the “stability triangle”
All forklifts have a centre of gravity where the weight has equal concentration with the load it carries. The “stability triangle” is a three-point suspension system that keeps the forklift from tipping over. Operators must stay within the forklift’s specified load capacity to maintain good stability and prevent a dangerous tip-over. Keep forks as low to the ground as possible to increase stability.
Never overload a forklift
A common mistake when loading a forklift is not accounting for any attachments used. Be sure to combine the weight of the attachment with the load being carried and adjust as needed to avoid exceeding the counterweight of the forklift. Overloading a forklift can cause the back wheels to rise and the unit to fall over, leading to fatal injuries and equipment damage.
Ensure loads are secure
Take extra time to check that loads are balanced and stable. Make sure pallets and skids are the appropriate weight for the load and secure heavy loads with ropes or bindings when necessary - especially when driving over ramps and uneven ground. An unstable load increases the risk of material falling off and seriously injuring another worker.
Stay within the designated speed limits
Another leading cause of forklift accidents is the result of turning, changing directions, or stopping suddenly at high speed. This highlights the importance of driving your forklift within the designated speed limit and slowing down when you need to turn or change directions.
Keep up with regular forklift maintenance
Like any vehicle, a
forklift requires routine maintenance
to ensure all parts and components are working as they should. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule, which is typically every 200 hours, along with a full annual inspection.
When it comes to forklift safety, there’s no such thing as being too diligent. We encourage you to observe
National Safety Month
with us here at Brandt by providing your workers with the resources, tools and education they need to help prevent workplace accidents.
