How to Choose the Right Pallet Rack Design
How to Choose the Right Pallet Rack Design
December 06, 2018
Material Handling
Organizing and designing pallet racking in a warehouse is not an easy task and should not be carried out in a rush. Before you design your storage facility, it’s important to understand the application and rack size requirements. To make certain pallet racks can store inventory appropriately and ensure your warehousing needs are met, there are several considerations to evaluate before you order and install
pallet racking
.
If you’re thinking of adding new pallet racks into your warehouse or you want to increase the efficiency of your existing design, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you ensure your pallet racks are set up correctly and are doing what they’re supposed to do.
Measure once, measure twice
First step; get an accurate measurement of the space you intend to use for your pallet racks. If required, get help from a professional team to assist you in measuring the footprint of your storage area. Calculate the usable square feet you have available — not just raw square footage. Consider variables like pipes, curbs, columns and other building installations that can be potential obstacles in your working space.
Assess for obstructions
Ensure your day-to-day operations won't be affected. Watch out for potential hazards that could impact warehouse operations negatively. Blocked power outlets, blocked access to doors/exits, blocked vents should all be factors that are considered ahead of time. All these considerations should be a part of your final floor plan layout.
Choose pallet racks wisely
Choose the right pallet rack for the job. Upright pallet rack frames, for example, don’t collide with the roof of the warehouse. The right pallet rack decking could be the game changer for successful inventory storage and warehouse operation. A good comparison would be between wire decking and steel rack decking. Wire decking offers more flexibility and easier access, but denser pallets (or heavier items that won’t move as often) can be stored on steel rack decking. Get proper measurements and make sure you won’t need more space than you’ve calculated.
Space management
Once you have the details on your layout finalized, check for any misuse in your designated space. The last thing you’d want is to find out that you have accidentally overstepped an invisible ‘boundary line’ which in turn has created further traffic and storage problems. Trace the outlines carefully around the installation area, before setting up your warehouse.
Safety first
Finally, once your pallet racks are installed safely and ready to go, make sure you maintain safety regulations around them. Regularly check the anchors holding the uprights in place, arrange for enough safety panels to prevent accidents and help traffic management, and most importantly, train all your warehouse operators on pallet handling and forklift operation, even if they don’t interact with the pallet racks directly.
